Three Cariboo Archers returned from the 2024 Canadian Indoor 3D Archery Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia with some medals to show for their efforts.

Cara Fraser, Lily Fraser and Al Campsall all competed against 133 of the top 3D archers from across Canada.

Flying from Kamloops to Halifax to reduce the risk of losing their equipment in any transfers, the three then rented a vehicle to drive to Sydney for the event, which took place across three separate indoor arenas.

After the first day of competition, Lily was in first in her category, Cara was in the top five in hers and Campsall was in second in his.

Lily once again dominated her category and ended the competition with the top winning percentage of all archers at the championships, according to Campsall. She won gold in the Under18 Women’s Known category, her fourth gold medal in a Canadian championship, and finished 464 points ahead of the silver medalist.

Cara finished fourth in the Women’s Known50 category, a category Campsall said was “hotly contested.” Known refers to the competitors being allowed to use range finding devices to know the distance from the target. Cara had previously won one gold medal at a Canadian championship.

Campsall shot well, though he was unable to take top spot, he brought home a silver medal in the Masters60 Compound category. The medal makes eight silver medals for the 71-year-old at the Canadian Championships, alongside his 21 gold medals and nine bronze throughout his years of competition.

All three Cariboo archers were selected to compete in the Grand Prix, in which the top eight archers across six divisions participate in a shoot-off of one-arrow elimination rounds.

Lily beat out all the women compound known archers and took home the title and a buckle award. Campsall and Cara both finished fourth among the top adult shooters in their categories.

“It was heartening to see my two students on stage at the same time in the Grand Prix,” said Campsall.

He said the local Junior Olympian Program is showing some positive results through these types of high profile wins.

Later this month, the Cariboo Archers will be hosting a flat field 3D fun shoot on Sunday, April 21. The event starts at 10 a.m. at the Bond Lake Sportsmen’s Association facility.

There will be a concession and the event is open to archers of all abilities.
