Williams Lake figure skater Reagan West was awarded 2023 STAR Athlete Award for the entire B.C. and Yukon section of Skate Canada in May.

Reagan was given the award at Skate Canada’s annual awards banquet in Burnaby, where she received the award from Scott Moir, a retired Canadian ice dancer and coach who, along with his ice dance partner Tessa Virtue, were the 2010 and 2018 Olympic champions and 2014 Olympic silver medalists.

According to Skate Canada, the award is aimed at recognizing skaters demonstrating commitment and determination to the SKATE program. It is not hard to see how Reagan makes a great candidate.

Reagan has ranked in the top three provincially for the past three years and has achieved quadruple gold status by successfully completing all Skate Canada figure skating tests, which was a first for the Williams Lake Skating Club.

Beyond achievement in the program itself, the athlete given this award should also display passion for the sport and achieves success in skill development and growth.

Again, Reagan has shown herself to be a role model for younger skaters, according to coaches.

As well as her own skating, Reagan has volunteered her time the last six years as a program assistant in the CanSkate Program, which teaches children from three to twelve years old how to skate.

In addition to skating six days a week, Reagan is an honours student with distinction at Lake City Secondary School, and she also tutors students in math and science.

Reagan was at the awards with her parents Scott and Robyn West and her coach Joanne Mcnair.

Reagan will be leaving figure skating to move on to attend the University of Calgary in the BSc - Psychology program in the fall.
