Williams Lake youth to compete at 2024 BC Summer Games

Local athletes will compete in basketball, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and swimming

Sixteen Williams Lake area athletes are competing at the BC Summer Games July 18 to 21 in Maple Ridge, B.C.

They will be part of the Zone 8 teams, which encompasses the Cariboo Northeast.

Jake Moulton, 14, and Linkin Proctor, 14 are competing in basketball.

Annica Stalker, 13, Emmeline Theriault, 12, Jasper Bird, 13, and Julien Allaire, 14, are on the swim team.

Alexis Sherlock, 15, Aya Katsura, 15, and Willa-Lynn Redl, 14, are members of the soccer team.  Two weeks ago, the girls soccer team competed at the Surrey Premium Cup, giving the players a taste of what to expect at the BC Summer Games.

The players said all their games were close.

Williams Lake secondary school teacher Nara Riplinger is assistant coach alongside head coach Jo Bray who runs the Timberwolves Girls Academy in Prince George.

Playing for the lacrosse team are Lucas Sanford, 15, Lane Carson, 16, and Tyler Beaulne, 16.

They said it is their first time competing at summer games and so far they have attended two practices with the Zone 8 team, and will practise again on July 13 an 14.

Livia Seabourne, 17, is on the rugby team along with Jessabelle Atkinson-Trellenberg and Kalli Campbell.

Tobin Kruus, 13, is on the soccer team and said by the time the games roll around he will be 14.

The games will bring in more 3,500 athletes, coaches and officials.

Maple Ridge hosted the BC Summer Games in 1983 and 1998.

The city was set to host the 2020 BC Summer Games before the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year will be the first time ultimate will be included as one of the sports.

Ultimate is a non-contact sport played with a frisbee (disc) by two seven-player teams, with the object of the game is to score goals.
