The Williams Lake Wolverines have notched another tournament win.

The team placed first for the third time this season, this time at the second annual Sun Peaks Resort three-on-three ball hockey tournament held Aug. 18.

The Wolverines won the Williams Lake Indian Band Spring Ball Hockey Classic in June and also at a tournament at Skeetchestn (Savona) First Nation in April.

Teammates Sheldon Wycotte and Ryley Haines said there were eight teams competing at Sun Peaks in the brand new arena and theirs was the only team not from Kamloops.

“We won our first game 11 to one to The Dusty Squidbillies, our second game six to five against Here for the Beer, our third game 11 to 10 to Blues,” said Haines.

In that third game, Haines tied it up to go to a shoot out and Wilfred Robbins scored the winning goal, Wycotte said.

To win the tournament, the Wolverines beat the Below Average Joes 10 to 5.

The other teams competing were the Flyers, Africa by Toto and Team Sun Peaks.

Sun Peaks events manager Cara Karpluk said the tournament was fun and congratulated the Wolverines on their win.

“Things got a little intense in the final game but overall the event was a success,” Karpluk said. “We have such a great facility for this type of tournament with the outdoor rink at Sun Peaks and look forward to growth in the future.”

The Wolverines are a co-ed team has nine players and they play two or three times a week at Deep Creek in the new gymnasium.

“Sometimes we will play on a Saturday and fire up the barbecue afterwards, ” Wycotte said, noting on Sept. 28 they will be hosting a tournament at Deep Creek.

When asked what they love about the game, Wycotte said it gets everybody together to have some fun.

“It also keeps people busy and out of trouble and it’s cheaper than playing ice hockey,” he added.

Haines likes the fact you can play all year around, he said.

Wycotte said he would like to see an annual ball tournament also held during Stampede Weekend in Williams Lake and an outdoor rink built somewhere in the city in the future.
