Roughly 200 motocross riders will be in Williams Lake this weekend for the final round of the MCQMX provincial championship series at the Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association track.

Motocross riders of all ages will be in the lakecity this weekend when the Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association hosts the final round of the MCQMX BC Championships.

When the dust settles at the end of the day Sunday provincial champions will be crowned based on points accumulated throughout the 2018 riding season. Previous championship rounds were held in Nanaimo Aug. 11-12 and in Prince George Sept. 1-2.

This weekend’s event in Williams Lake will be third and final round of the series, which combines riders from both the north and south regions of B.C., and will feature upwards of 200 riders.

WLDRA director and pro motocross racer Brock Hoyer said it will be the first time Williams Lake has hosted a provincial round at its track.

While weather may play a role in the riding conditions, Hoyer said the WLDRA executive is busy making sure the track will be in top shape come the weekend.

“We’ve got a lot of great people working on getting the track ready, and lots of donations from around town and we’ll get the track tuned up so it’ll be in good shape so hopefully it won’t be a full-on mud race, anyway,” Hoyer said.

Locally, Hoyer said roughly 15 riders will be participating in the provincial championship, however, noted injuries have played a role in many of Williams Lake’s top rider’s seasons including youth racers Thomas Kaiser, Marcus Deausy and Noah Porter.

“We’ve got a couple vets in the plus-40 and plus-30 divisions hoping to come out, and lots of younger kids,” Hoyer said. “We’re hoping we can get the community to come up, check it out and cheer on our local guys.”

Hoyer, meanwhile, will be racing in pro class, and possibly the plus-30 class on the weekend.

“It’s always a good time [riding at home],” he said. “We’ve got a great group of volunteers — our president TJ Frizzi and vice-president Ryan Bailey — have been doing tons to get that track rolling.”

For anyone interested in attending the races, practice starts at 8 a.m. and runs until noon with racing to follow until 1 p.m.

Racing will resume again Sunday morning and continue until the late afternoon.

“You’ll see kids on 50cc bikes, kids that are four years old, to men pushing 60 years old, so it’s pretty cool to see,” Hoyer said.

“It’s a fun environment for families, we’ll be giving out lots of prizes and it should be a good time.”

Hoyer noted due to the scheduling of the provincial series, however, he won’t be allowed to host his motocross school on the Friday prior to the race weekend due to a provincial ruling.
