Williams Lake ladies sweep joint bonspiel titles

The Williams Lake Curling Club hosted its annual Men’s and Ladies’ Open Joint Bonspiel over the weekend where 26 men’s teams and 20 ladies’ teams competed.

The Williams Lake Curling Club hosted its annual Men’s and Ladies’ Open Joint Bonspiel over the weekend where 26 men’s teams and 20 ladies’ teams competed.The bonspiel began Friday and wound its way down Sunday afternoon with the finals.On the ladies’ side it was a clean sweep for Williams Lake rinks in each of the three divisions.The ladies’ ‘A’ event winner was the Lynn Lanki rink, while Yvonne Teskey’s rink took the ‘B’ title. Winning the ‘C’ event was Laura Ball’s rink.On the men’s side, Quesnel’s Darcy Tolefson rink took the ‘A’ title, while Quesnel’s Billy Barker Casino rink skipped by Brady Waffle took second. Finishing third was Williams Lake’s Jerry Mooney rink.In the ‘B’ event, Forest Grove’s Rick Knight rink took first place. Finishing second was Quesnel’s Alex Coffee rink while 100 Mile House’s Ted Ney nabbed third.The ‘C’ event saw Williams Lake’s Ken Teskey rink take the title, while Vic LeBlanc’s Quesnel rink took second. Finishing third was Williams Lake’s Ron Hume, followed by Williams Lake’s Ron Bisaro rink in fourth.Hume, who organized the men’s event at the bonspiel, said the highlight of the tournament on the men’s side came during the ‘C’ final where Teskey and LeBlanc squared off for two extra ends to determine the winner.“They were tied after eight, they blanked the first extra end which is kind of unusual, and then curled a second extra end to determine a winner,” Hume said. “It was a real good game and quite exciting.”Players travelled to the bonspiel from McBride, Kamloops, 100 Mile House and Quesnel to round out the field.Of note, the Tim Horton’s B.C. Senior Men’s Curling Championship is underway in Kamloops where Williams Lake’s John Shephard (skip), Don Parsons (third), Gerry Leclerc (second) and Rodney Anderson (lead) are competing.Shephard won his first draw over Richmond’s Sandy Greig rink Tuesday, 7-6, before falling 11-2 Tuesday night to Richmond’s Greg McAulay rink. Shephard was in action Wednesday at noon and at 7 p.m. and will square off today at noon versus Comox’s Wayne Harris rink.
