The Williams Lake Basketball Association is inviting girls ages 11-14 years old to an all girls basketball camp.

Thompson Rivers University’s Williams Lake Campus will host the camp for three evenings: Tuesday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 26 and Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on each date.

Local female coaches will be leading the camp, which will include skill development for players from beginner to experienced skill levels. The all-female coaching crew includes Kaylee Billyboy, Frances McCoubrey, Asia Nichol, and Amanda Campbell.

Travis Nystoruk, founder of the Williams Lake Basketball Association, is helping to organize the all-girls camp.

“I’d really love for there to be more opportunity for women and young girls in the Cariboo,” he said of basketball, noting there is a growing women’s coaching pool now to draw on.

With his daughters only nine and six at this time, they won’t be in the camp, but they both already play in the mixed basketball league for ages five to seven and eight to 10 taking place at Nesika Elementary twice a week. The league will be wrapping up in October, but will start again in January.

Dribbling, shooting, defence and teamwork will all be included in the upcoming camp at TRU.

The aim is to build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills in an all-girl environment. The entire camp is $10 for the three sessions. To register, contact Williams Lake Basketball at 250-392-0384, email lakecitybasketball@shaw.ca or go to www.wlbasketball.com.
