The Williams Lake U16 Storm rep soccer team is headed to the provincial championships.
The team punched its berth to the provincials in Terrace on Sunday after shutting out Prince George 1-0 in a physical game.
Head coach Rob Tazelaar summed up the team’s effort following the tournament.
“Confident competitors don’t quit when they are behind and don’t let up when they are ahead,” he told the team. “They just keep fighting.”
The Storm opened its tournament Saturday morning facing the eventual zone championship winner, Terrace, where they fell 2-0.
“Terrace came second at the provincials last year and the boys fought hard against them,” said team manager Lisa Hutchinson.
Next, they took on Smithers Saturday evening where Cameron Ardiel potted the team’s only goal and keeper Melkum Pitt kept Smithers off the scoreboard in the 1-0 final.
Sunday in the team’s final game against Prince George, Josh Rhodes scored a header off a corner kick from Justin Foster to tally the only goal of the match.
The team will now travel to the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup in North Vancouver from July 7-10, hosted at Ambleside Park and Klahanie Park.
