A trio of female hockey players from Williams Lake will play for the North Zone at the Female U16 BC Cup in 100 Mile House from March 31 to April 3.
Alena Mayer, Chantelle Rolph and Tessa Hare were selected to play for the team after attending a tryout camp from Jan. 2-3 in Mackenzie earlier this winter.
“We went up there and had a couple of practices and played two games,” Hare said and noted 18 of about 30 players were selected for the team.
Mayer, Rolph and Hare will be joined by players from Prince George, Quesnel and 100 Mile House to round out the North Zone squad at the BC Cup.
Mayer and Hare both said a trip last year to the BC Winter Games in Terrace will help them be prepared for this year’s BC Cup.
“I’m less nervous, and you kind of know what you’re getting,” Mayer said.
The North Zone team is being coached by Brian Shawara of McBride. Williams Lake resident Jane Flinton will also be travelling with the team as a trainer.
Rolph added she’s looking forward to the experience, and all three girls said this is a great first step in broadening their horizons should they eventually decide to pursue hockey scholarships in the future.
“It’s a good experience,” Rolph said.
“The fact you’re going to meet other girls as good as you.”
The trio said they will prepare for the tournament by playing with their respective house teams; however, Hare was recently sidelined with a broken wrist at a basketball tournament but hopes to be ready for the tournament.
