Stamps take 1-0 East Division series lead

The Williams Lake Stampeders went up 1-0 in the CIHL East Division final after a 5-1 win over the Quesnel Kangaroos Saturday.

The Williams Lake Stampeders used discipline and scoring prowess to perfection Saturday in Quesnel to take a 1-0 best-of-three series lead over the Quesnel Kangaroos in the Central Interior Hockey League East Division final.

Stampeders sniper Jassi Sangha scored twice and tallied three points to lead all scorers, while Williams Lake netminder Justin Foote turned aside 35 of 36 shots in a 5-1 win.

Williams Lake led 1-0 after one after Sangha opened the scoring midway through the frame. Quesnel's Levon Johnson tied it up early in the second before the floodgates opened for Williams Lake.

Dylan Richardson made it 2-1 shortly after, followed by another marker from Matt Lees to head into the third up 3-1. Nathan Zurak added a power player goal, followed by Sangha's second to close out the scoring. Stamps defenceman and captain Aaron Zurak also contributed two assists.

Quesnel's Ryan Manderson stopped 38 of 43 shots in the losing effort.

Penalties in the contest heavily tilted toward Quesnel, who amassed 26 minutes in penalties to just 10 for Williams Lake.

In the CIHL West Division final the Smithers Steelheads upended the Kitimat Ice Demons 4-1 in Kitimat. Ian Smith (3) and Mark Arnold lit the lamp for the Steelheads, while Brandon Wakita potted the lone goal for the Ice Demons.

Game two of each respective series goes next Saturday, where Williams Lake will host the Quesnel Kangaroos at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex in Williams Lake for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.

Game three, if necessary, goes Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the CMRC.
