Williams Lake has demonstrated its consistent support for members of our community who play for B.C. rugby teams.

Each year, when players from Williams Lake are selected, local businesses have supported their efforts.

Five local rugby players who will compete at the 2011 U18 Canadian Women’s Rugby Nationals in Calgary this summer are grateful for the support they’ve received from the community.

Williams Lake’s Jaime Carrier, Jasmyn Niquidet, Erica Pfleiderer, Alexis Myhre and Melanie Dallow were chosen to the team, and will begin play for Team B.C. in Calgary from Aug. 16-21.

A local gym has provided continual support through sponsoring membership passes, and many local businesses and community members have contributed with financial support and encouragement.

This year, the group said the support for them has been particularly impressive. Each of the girls has been sponsored by the generous community of Williams Lake to the tune of almost $1,200 each to help with travel costs.

The girls recently returned from North Vancouver where they participated in five grueling days of training. They had been informed that at the end of the session the team would be trimmed by two players.

Last week, all five girls were informed they were still on the team and will return for training camp for another four days prior to leaving Vancouver for the national tournament on Aug. 15.
