Fresh off his Battlefield Fight League featherweight championship win, Williams Lake’s Gurdarshan Gary ‘Saint Lion’ Mangat will be in Williams Lake this weekend helping conduct a mixed martial arts seminar.

Paul Rosborough, co-owner of Stand Fast Muay Thai in Williams Lake, is hosting the full-day seminar this Sunday, Jan. 30 and is inviting anyone interested to sign up.

“It’s for anyone that’s involved in martial arts or that wants to get involved,” Rosborough says. “People can expect a disciplined seminar on mixed martial arts and the martial arts mind frame.”

Rosborough said he and Mangat will teach basic standup techniques and ground skills that focus on being a disciplined athlete.

“This is a really good opportunity,” he says. “Gary’s the kind of fighter that will probably be in the UFC [Ultimate Fighting Championship] one day. It’s not every day you get to train with someone at that calibre. He’s a really good example of a martial artist — he’s an honest guy, he’s got a clean lifestyle and he’s gone after something and it’s paid off for him.”

Mangat, 23 and a graduate of Columneetza secondary, won the 145-pound featherweight title on Jan. 15 at Richmond’s River Rock Casino and Resort, beating Kelowna’s Cam Deleurme in a unanimous decision to become the first Sikh in mixed martial arts history to win a title.

“He’s a really good example of what you can accomplish,” Rosborough says. “He’s from a small town and he’s doing pretty big things.”

The seminar is $45 and has a pre-registration deadline of Friday, Jan. 28, and will be hosted at the Stand Fast Muay Thai gym, located at room 116 in the Pioneer Complex.

The seminar will go from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break.
