Lake City Chess Open Saturday

The Third Annual Lake City Chess Open is just days away.

The Third Annual Lake City Chess Open is just days away.

Coming up Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Williams Lake Library, organizer Scott Richardson said players can expect a gruelling day of chess.

Players are being asked to arrive between 9:15 and 9:50 a.m. to ensure a first-round pairing.

Participants registered for either an open division, or youth division and there will be cash prizes for first-, second- and third-place finishers in both divisions.

“Three-hundred dollars [is] guaranteed for the open,” Richardson said. “Youth cash prizes will depend on the number of players.”

New to this year’s tournament is a new youth prize sponsored by Chess2inspire(.org).

“First place [now] has a seat at the BC Junior Championships,” Richardson said.

The 2016 BC Junior Championships are being held Nov. 11-13 in Richmond.

As for this year’s Lake City Chess Open, Richardson said this year’s tournament includes more pre-registered players than the previous two events. Pre-registration ends Thursday, Oct. 13 at midnight and is available by visiting lakecitychess.homestead.com/williams-lake-chess.html.
