Judo club to host third annual Throw-A-Thon

The Williams Lake Judo Club will host its third annual Throw-A-Thon Monday, April 22 at the local dojo.

If you’ve never been thrown (or the one throwing) on your back repeatedly for five consecutive minutes, Williams Lake Judo Club Sensei Jeff DiMarco can help describe what it feels like.

“It’s super tiring to go for five minutes straight,” said DiMarco who, along with his students at the WLJC, will host the third annual WLJC Throw-A-Thon this Monday, April 22, at the club, located at 360B on North Mackenzie Avenue. “The first year I did it I had a sore back before, and I woke up the next morning after that and my back felt great. It obviously slammed some things back into place.

“Last year was a bit harder. You’ve really got to pace yourself because five minutes wears on you if you’re going hard.”

The club hosts the Throw-A-Thon as its annual fundraiser to help them get through the summer months when classes aren’t scheduled.

“Basically our members go out and collect pledges,” DiMarco said. “Some get pledges based on how many throws they do and others collect donations.”

He added the club, as a whole, hopes to achieve between 400 and 500 throws between its junior and senior members.

DiMarco invites anyone interested to attend the event, which gets underway at 6:15 p.m.

“It’s going to be a workout, too,” he said.
