The father, daughter duo of Jeff DiMarco and Georgia DiMarco were victorious at a judo tournament at the Olympic Oval in Richmond Feb. 4.

The Williams Lake Judo Club members amassed a combined six wins and one loss at the tournament, competing against athletes from around the province.

Georgia went undefeated in the girls under 11, 30 kilogram age group to win the gold medal.

Meanwhile, Jeff won three of his matches before falling short in the final against a tough opponent in the senior men’s under 66 kilogram division to win the silver medal.

A judo match ends when one competitor is thrown by his opponent and lands flat on his back. Partial points are also awarded for throws that cause opponents to land on their sides.

“You can also win on the ground, if you can hold someone down for 25 seconds, or you can submit, as well,” Jeff said.

“My opponent was from the Lower Mainland. He medalled at nationals last year so he was pretty tough.”

Jeff said it’s a lot of fun attending tournaments with his daughter, and added they both enjoy getting out to a few tournaments a year.

“Georgia really likes to compete so we try to get her to a couple tournaments a year,” Jeff said.

“She had four in her division so she fought everyone. She threw everyone, and I don’t think she was thrown at all by anyone — she fairly well dominated.”
