Jackrabbits race to medal haul at Quesnel Elementary Ski Tournament

Williams Lake Jackrabbits skied to multiple medals earlier this month at the Quesnel Elementary Ski Tournament.

Five racers representing Williams Lake — Ethan Reid 12, Ciara Reid, 12, Ella Svenson, 9, Eric Svenson, 7 and Zinedine Jukic — combined for two gold medals four silver medals and a bronze medal in individual races, along with bringing home the silver medal in the open relay.

Williams Lake was one of nine teams at the event, where 55 total racers were grouped based on age and gender for freestyle races, while double cross was contested as an open age/gender event.

Ethan skied to a gold medal for the boys beginning 11/12 freestyle and a silver medal in the boys beginner 11/12 double cross.

Ciara picked up a gold in the girls beginner 11/12 freestyle and a silver in the girls beginner 11/12 double cross.

Eric raced to a bronze medal in the boys experience 9/10 freestyle and a silver medal in the boys experienced 9/10 double cross.

Zinedine, meanwhile, claimed a silver medal in the boys beginner freestyle.

The relay, open to all ages, genders and experience levels, saw Williams Lake raced to a silver medal, narrowly missing out on the gold.

Williams Lake had the smallest team of just five members, and managed to pick up an impressive fifth-place overall finish despite.

Williams Lake is now preparing to hosts its third annual Williams Lake Elementary School Ski Tournament on Sunday, March 5 at the Bull Mountain Ski Area.

It’s expected to be a fun day of competitive cross country skiing for elementary school children aged four to 12.

There will be three exciting race events including freestyle technique sprint, classic race, mass start and a team relay race.

Every participant will receive a ribbon and the school with the most points wins a school trophy.

Free registration is available until Monday, Feb. 27. Warm-up at the races will begin at 9 a.m., followed by racing at 10 a.m.
