Grant Johnson scored an overtime marker to lead the Sugar Cane Hurricanes (Williams Lake Indian Band) to the championship March 27 at the 20th Annual Arrows Ice Hockey Tournament in Lac La Hache.

The tournament, formerly known as the Douglas Hance Memorial Cup, was hosted at the Rolf Zeis Memorial Arena from March 26-27, featuring six teams and was a modified round robin format.

Each team played three round robin games and the top four played an extra game for the finals.

“We are pleased to share our success with the supporters and players that played the major part at this sporting social gathering,” said tournament organizer Gerald Johnny. “Everyone enjoyed themselves to be around friends and relatives and meeting new people.”

The Hurricanes snuck past the Dog Creek Roadrunners in the tournament final to take the win.

Finishing in third place was the Stone Thunderbirds.

Following the tournament awards presentations were made. Presentations were made to the following players:

All-Star Defence — Gilbert Robbins (Sugar Cane) and BeeMan Camille (Dog Creek Roadrunners)

All-Star Forwards — Brent Adolph (Dog Creek Roadrunners), Ellery Brigham (Stone Thunderbirds) and Willie Sellars (Hun City)

Best Goalie — Calvin Dubray (Dog Creek Roadrunners)

Tournament MVP — Robin Gilbert

During this year’s tournament the Douglas Hance Memorial Cup trophy was retired and awarded to the Sugar Cane Hurricanes as a keeper trophy.

Johnny added a number of donations were made from the Alexis Creek Indian band, Alice Johnny, Tashina Johnny, Bernice Whitey and Stanley Stump Sr.

“A big thank you to all from the Arrows Sports Club,” Johnny said.
