The Williams Lake Curling Club hosted its annual Men’s and Ladies’ Joint Bonspiel during the weekend where local curlers, and out-of-town participants competed.

Contested in a bracket-style draw on both the men’s and ladies’ side, curlers were seeded into ‘A,’ ‘B,’ and ‘C’ draws based on their wins and losses which wrapped up with finals in each division on Sunday afternoon.

“Overall, it was a great weekend,” said WLCC president Robert Gudbranson.

“We had some good games that went into extra ends to make things exciting.”

On the men’s side the ‘A’ division winners were Ron Graden (skip), Rick Riemer, Steve Remesz and Stephen Day. Runners up were Ken Hill (skip), Mark Berg, John Dryden and Roger Hicks.

In the ladies’ ‘A’ final Laura Ball (skip), Simone Groundwater, Michelle Ball and Isabelle Groundwater claimed the championship.

Of note, Isabelle became the youngest curler in Williams Lake to ever win an ‘A’ event at the young age of 10 years old.

The ‘B’ event winners in the men’s draw were Brian Purdy (skip), Doyle Allan, Dennis Mitchelle and Brad Brown-John. Second place went to Mark Law (skip), Peter Bowman, Mike Pederson and Darcy Lillico.

Lynda Terry (skip), Maggie Duerst, Wendy Miller and Naomi Miller bested Donna Shiach (skip), Gail McLellan, Betty Dryden and Tatiana Hill to earn the ‘B’ title in the ladies’ draw.

And on the ‘C’ side Ryan Bailey (skip), Robert Gudbranson, Shane Doddridge and Dave McCracken upended Quesnel skip Grant Wawryk’s rink to win the division.

On the ladies’ ‘C’ side it was Lori Freeman (skip) and her Quesnel rink of Cindy Nikirk, Lynn Mamic and Ang Curl defeating Liz Salle (skip), Debbie Rand, Anna Redekop and Donna-Lee Gunderson.

Gudbranson said he would personally like to thank all the volunteers that helped out organizing the bonspiel, along with all the sponsors, for making it a success.

“Especially the ice guys, Ken Kvist, Ken Teskey and Murray Carruthers. I’m excited for next year, already. We plan on looking into a block schedule that should result in more games to be played for everyone.”
