Williams Lake’s Julia Flinton is currently carrying out her dream of representing Canada at the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain.

The 21-year-old University of Saskatchewan Huskies defenceman was named to the team by Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) late October as one of 20 university players in the country.

On Wednesday Canada opened its tournament with a 7-1 drubbing of Kazakhstan.

Flinton and her Canadian teammates’ next action comes in the form of Russia on Sunday, Feb. 8.

At the tournament Canada is pooled with Kazakhstan and Russia in group ‘B,’ while the U.S., China, Japan and Spain round out group ‘A.’

The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival for student athletes staged every two years in a different city and second only to the Olympic games.

The women’s hockey semifinals are slated for Feb. 11, while the tournament final goes Feb. 12.
