Special Olympics organizers in Williams Lake are hoping to drum up some interest in helping increase volunteering and coaching for its athletes.

The group, which started up with strong participation again last year playing soccer, participating in a fitness class and bowling, is now down to one coach working with a small number of athletes each Monday in the Marie Sharpe elementary gymnasium.

“We could increase the numbers if we had another coach or someone to help with rides home within the community,” Special Olympics organizer Craig Hilker said. “We also would like another coach to help with our soccer team in the early part of the new year.”

Last year, the team attended the zone soccer championships in Quesnel and Hilker said they plan to compete again this year, along with attend the bowling zone championships in the early spring.

Currently, five adults are participating in the fitness class at Marie Sharpe where they play basketball, volleyball and other sports from 5 until 7 p.m.

“We’re in desperate need for volunteers,” Hilker said.

If anyone in the community would like to help out they can contact Hilker at 250-267-7989.
