Cariboo Run Crew to bring competitive trail race to Fox Mountain Trails June 24

Williams Lake running group Cariboo Run Crew will be hosting a timed trail race called the Fast Fox Trail Race on June 24.

The event is aimed at bringing a competitive timed race to the lakecity, highlighting the amazing local resource in our area’s trail systems. Many of the local runners have been attending races in other communities, including those hosted by the very active Quesnel running group Reason 2 Run.

“We’ve been trying to plan for awhile,” said Kim Lewis, race coordinator. She said the group is hoping to attract runners from across the region, with some from Quesnel already signed up.

While the area is already known for mountain biking, Lewis said “it feels like a hidden secret for trail running.”

With Cariboo Run Crew engaging with groups from Prince George, Kelowna and other centres, the secret might not be safe for long.

“Hopefully it will put us on the map,” said Lewis.

The race will take off from the Williams Lake Visitor Centre and will go up Fox Mountain trails from there. The race will offer a five kilometre and a 15 km loop. The shorter route will take runners up to Signal Point and down and the longer 15 km loop will wind up to Ross Road then back down again, taking in a number of trails on Fox Mountain. The event will go from about 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

It is $25 for the five kilometre event, $35 for the 15 km race and $10 off either if a person is a member of the Cariboo Run Crew.

Runners can register online via the group’s website caribooruncrew.com or in person at Tasco Supplies. The group is working with the Williams Lake Cycling Club (WLCC) to coordinate trail closures on the day of the event and the WLCC will be providing the use of their timing system for the event as well. Cariboo Run Crew is looking for additional volunteers to help support racers, anyone interested in helping out at a checkpoint along the way can email caribooruncrew1@outlook.com.

The Cariboo Run Crew was started in 2018 to create community around trail running in the area and offer opportunities for runners of all levels to support one another and give a chance to members to explore the different trails.

Cariboo Run Crew meets up Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings for regular runs accessible to all levels of runner.

The Wednesday runs start out from the Station House at 5 p.m. while Saturday runs meet up in different spots at 9 a.m.
