Blue Fins make Valentine splash in Kamloops

The Williams Lake Blue Fins returned from the Kamloops Valentine Splash meet with swim caps stuffed full of ribbons.

The event, held at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre and hosted by the Kamloops Classics Swim Club, featured more than 200 swimmers and ran from Feb. 5-6.

Paige Kovacs, 8, finished with four firsts, two seconds and one third.

Paige took first in the 50-metre backstroke, the 100-metre backstroke, the 50-metre butterfly and the 100-metre individual medley in the eight-year-old girls category. She also claimed second in the 100-metre freestyle and the 100-metre breaststroke events, and won third in the 50-metre freestyle.

Leif Brandson, 7, also walked away from the event with three first-place ribbons, three second-place finishes and one third.

Leif took first in the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre backstroke and 250-metre breaststroke events. He also won second in the 100-metre freestyle, the 100-metre backstroke and the 25-metre butterfly, before taking a third in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Ty Lauren, 7, took third place in both the 50-metre freestyle and 25-metre backstroke seven-and-under boys events. Ty also finished fourth in the 25-metre freestyle.

Re’ka Sikli won second in the 100-metre girls 11 and above breaststroke and claimed third in the 50-metre breaststroke.

Maia Vitoratos claimed second in the 100-metre backstroke in the girls eight-year-old division, and won third in the 50-metre buttefly.

Kasha Vitoratos took third in the 25-metre backstroke, the 50-metre backstroke and the 25-metre butterfly in the girls seven and under division.

Kara Zavitz, racing in the 11 and above division, finished with a first-place finish in the 50-metre backstroke. Zavitz also finished one tenth of a second off a ‘AA’ qualifying time in the 100-metre backstroke event.

In the boys eight-year-old division, Drew Woodford finished with a first-place result in the 100-metre freestyle and second-place ribbons in all three of the 50-metre freestyle, 50-metre breaststroke and 50-metre backstroke events.

This weekend, from Feb. 11-13, select members of the Blue Fins will be heading to the B.C. ‘AA’ short course championship in Chilliwack at the Landing Leisure Centre.

Swimmers include: Ashley Beauchamp, Coral Choi, Chloe Sylvain, Tracey Beauchamp, Geneva Gordon, David Russell, Kelsey Blokland, Janna Kovacs and Patrick Verbeeck.
