Just under 400 swimmers converged on the Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre Feb. 8-10 for the 2013 SwimBC Short Course AA Championships.

And the Williams Lake Blue Fins were right in the thick of it, swimming up a storm in the 2013 Provincial Trials Championships.

“As always, this is always one of the most exciting meets of the year as most of these swimmers were there seeking to attain their first AAA times to qualify for the AAA championships,” said Blue Fins head coach Chad Webb.

Emerging from the meet was one new qualifier for the AAA Provincial Championships to join two other Williams Lake qualified swimmers.

Kara Zavitz destroyed the competition in the 100-metre backstroke and achieved a AAA time by more than a second, beating her competition by the same amount.

Zavitz finished second in the 200-metre backstroke and rounded her medal collection with a bronze as she led out the senior girls 200-metre medley relay.

Ashley Beauchamp also managed to knock almost five seconds off her 200-metre breaststroke time and qualified for AAA provincials but, unfortunately, ages up to the older age group right before Provincials making her ineligible for the meet.

“With an impressive amount of lifetime bests the club showed some great heart this weekend as we had 18 final swims and two relays,” Webb said, noting he was very pleased with the results and adding he thinks the club took another step forward toward some top-end results.

“Every Williams Lake swimmer showed a lot of determination in getting into 38 finals and swimming very well as they had to repeat fantastic morning swims. The first day was incredible as almost every swim as a lifetime best and that set the tone of the meet and the expectations for the swimmers.”

Top eight results are as follows:

Tracey Beauchamp, fifth in 200-metre individual medley (IM), eighth in 200-metre breaststroke; Ashley Beauchamp, fourth in 200-metre IM, fourth in 200-metre breaststroke, seventh in 100-metre butterfly; Danika Robson, eigth in 50-metre freestyle, fifth in 100-metre freestyle, sixth in 200-metre freestyle; Kelsey Blockland, seventh in 100-metre backstroke, fifth in 200-metre backstroke; Zavitz, first in 100-metre backstroke, eighth in 200-metre freestyle, second in 200-metre backstroke; Geneva Gordon, seventh in 200-metre breaststroke, fourth in 100-metre breaststroke; 200 Free Relay (Ashley, Tracey, Robson, Zavitz) fifth; 200 Medley Relay (Robson, Tracey, Ashley, Zavitz), second.
