Three Williams Lake Blue Fins swimmers attending the Team Aquatic Supplies 2011 B.C. ‘AAA’ Championships posted exceptional results.

Coral Choi, 11, swam to a fourth-place finish in the girls 11 and under 50-metre freestyle — her best finish of the weekend.

David Sikli, 13, placed fifth in the 100-metre breaststroke for boys aged 13 and Janna Kovacs, 11, finished eighth in the 11 and under 100-metre freestyle.

These top-10 finishes for the Blue Fins from a pool of all B.C. swimmers in their age groups are a tremendous result for the swimmers and the club.

Results from the ‘AAA’ championship are posted online on the Swim B.C. website at www.swimbc.ca.

Coming up for the Blue Fins is a time trial on Saturday, March 12 at the Sam Ketcham Memorial Pool which will serve in preparation for the Langley Olympians meet on April 2-3.

Curling club hosts successful forestry bonspiel

Brenda Sanford, Cindy Brady, Donna Monita and Mary Kay Simpson took first place in the ‘A’ event at this past weekend’s Ministry of Forests annual provincial curling bonspiel in Williams Lake.

The rink beat out Bob Sklapsky, Ed and Jenny Nedokus and Ray Lang for the title.

In the ‘B’ event, Don Chantler, Ken Breckenridge and Sid and Shelly Breckenridge went home winners after beating Alex Norquay, Sharon MacDonald, Ray Wiggins and Darius Low.

The ‘C’ event saw Spencer Atkins, Darrell Barron, Terry Dickie and Mike Gatenby defeat Bruce Jacque, Murray Carruthers, James Moe and Kym Keogh for the title.

The best dressed award — the ‘Rockers’ — went to Lindsey Wood, Dani Wood, Carrie Kerley and Jason Kerley.

The event, which ran March 4-5 at the Williams Lake Curling Club, played host to 15 teams from around the province. This year’s theme was 99 years on the wall, as the Ministry of Forests will celebrate 100 years service in 2012.

WL Slo-Pitch League on deck for 2011 season

The Williams Lake Rowdies, a team in the Williams Lake Slo-Pitch League, are currently in Montego Bay, Jamaica competing in a 16-team tournament.

In the past the Rowdies have travelled to Cuba, Mexico and the Dominican Republic to play in tournaments during the Williams Lake slo-pitch off-season.

“We’ve never been to Jamaica so we’re looking forward to it,” said Rowdies captain Linda Barbondy.

The tournament began yesterday and runs until March 16.

Barbondy, also the president of the Williams Lake Slo-Pitch League, said the first league meeting prior to the 2011 season will be at a to be announced date in the middle of April.

Also of note, the league has been working with the Cariboo Regional District for help with installing irrigation on one of the fields at the Esler Sports Complex.

“It’s confirmed we are getting irrigation on one field,” Barbondy said. “We’re hoping to have it installed by the end of the season. This is really good news as we’ve never had water up there and the fields suffer.”

New dugouts are also being worked on.

For more information, or if interested in signing up for a team, contact Barbondy at 250-392-6643.
