Bighorns cradle success in season openers

Williams Lake Bighorns lacrosse teams opened their seasons in a big way over the weekend, seeing success in each of the association’s divisions.

Games were played Saturday and Sunday at Williams Lake’s Cariboo Memorial Complex with the Bighorns hosting Quesnel, Mackenzie and Prince George.

In the novice division, the Bighorns finished with one win and one loss. Williams Lake downed Prince George 16-12 Saturday, before Prince George returned the favour Sunday with a 13-7 win.

The Williams Lake Bighorns peewee club went undefeated over the weekend tying Quesnel 10-10 before downing Mackenzie 15-10.

In the bantam division, Williams Lake finished with one win and one loss. The Bighorns fell 8-2 to Quesnel, before defeating Mackenzie 8-7 Sunday.

Meanwhile, in the midget division, the Bighorns went undefeated. Williams Lake dropped Quesnel, 5-3, before beating Mackenzie, 9-2.

Top goal scorers were Paul Hauk (novice) with 24 goals, Jordan Bunce (peewee) with 11 goals and four assists, Zane Engstrom (bantam) with six goals, Dayton Westerman (bantam) with six goals and Rylie Lawyrk (midget) with seven goals.

Bighorn newcomer Christian Wakely also potted his first goal over the weekend, while fellow first-year-players Seth Mullet and Matt Brenner each assisted on a couple of goals.

Next weekend, bantam goalie Brandon Bunce is travelling to Surrey playing for Team Interior in an attempt to land one of two goalie spots on Team B.C. during the team’s main camp.

Peewee players Erik and Jordan Bunce will also be representing Team Interior and are headed to Comox June 3 to compete at the Team B.C. main camp.

This coming weekend, all of the Bighorns teams will be in Prince George for a series of games.
