Voters should examine key issues

Re: Our Viewpoint – Down for the Count?  March 7, 2013.

Ken Alexander made a great point in his March 7 editorial, when he said it would be unfortunate if the NDP wins the coming election based solely on the unpopularity of the Liberals. I complete agree, and that’s why I’m proud that Adrian Dix and the NDP team are committed to running a positive campaign built around practical steps to change B.C. for the better.

I encourage voters to examine our commitments on key issues, including:

• Giving young people more access to education and skills training through

a $100 million grant program, funded by restoring a capital tax on banks;

• Diversifying our economy by strengthening tourism, agriculture, and a Buy

BC program;

• Better home care and community care for our seniors.

We have committed to freezing tax increases on small business, but we will increase taxes on large corporations by one per cent, to help pay for health care and other essential programs for British Columbians. During the election, the NDP will present a fully-costed platform that outlines what we will do, and how we will pay for it.

I take nothing for granted in this election. I know that I have to earn support by presenting a positive vision for the future of our community.
