On Friday, March 11 the world watched in a state of shock as the televisions and computer monitors streamed horrific images resulting from the massive earthquake and resulting tsunami to hit the coast of Japan.

Helpless with not much warning, homes were destroyed, innocent lives were lost, and families have been torn apart or vanished all together.

That same morning, while watching the news unfold, I got on my computer and sent an e-mail of concern to a Rotary International District Governor Hiroji Ohashi in the Fukushima Rotary District 2530 in Japan on behalf of the Rotary Club of Williams Lake Daybreak.

On Sunday, March 20, Sushi California opened its restaurant for the evening, serving a wonderful buffet dinner of sushi and hot foods. The staff and Rotary club members worked steadily for three hours, serving 169 meals and raising just over $6,300 for Japan relief to be used by Rotarians in Japan, supplying water and shelter to those in need.

I would like to send special thank you to Naomi and her family from Sushi California for opening your restaurant and your hearts for this cause; to the restaurant staff, domo arigato; Jason, thanks for being such a great sushi chef;  to my fellow Rotarians for all your hard work and dedication to bringing peace and harmony to our world; and finally to the people of Williams Lake — it is because of your continued generosity that Williams Lake, B.C. is known as a city of doers.

Yours in the spirit of Rotary, “Service above Self.”

president 2010/2011,
