Mission to China a success

With the City’s 2016 annual report just out, I thought it may be time to do some follow up.

With the City’s 2016 annual report just out, I thought it may be time to do some follow up from last year and the outlook for this year.

As we continue to focus on the finances in our ongoing commitment to accountable, transparent and open government we took a critical look at the budget and made significant steps to reduce cost wherever feasible without jeopardizing services. We also wanted to ensure the monies were being spent for the projects and operations they were budgeted for, which we have achieved without increasing our debt.

Our capital plan and roadwork upgrades remain on track, despite the challenges of trying to catch up on the roadwork and a static economy.

Our Museum and Cowboy Hall of Fame is relocating to the Tourism Discovery Center on a temporary basis, as the existing property will be used for development of the 72 bed care facility. Although the time frame is tight, the move will be an asset to the TDC, and provide an opportunity for a greater number of visitors to the Museum. A long-term plan is in the process.

The City has received a number of re-zoning applications as well as permits for new construction.

The Toop road intersection redevelopment will also take place this year. We are continuing to investigate the greenhouse project as well options for the wood fibre that is being burned or left in the bush.

The trade mission to China in May was a great success, and we made some good contacts for economic opportunities. There have been follow up conversations since our return that look promising.

The Sam Ketcham Pool project is ongoing, and we are all looking forward to enjoying the upgraded facility. Interior Health completed a health inspection for Phase One on June 14, and an opening date will be announced soon.

We are looking forward to another busy summer, with the upcoming 91st Annual Stampede and associated community events, Canada Day 150 celebrations in the park, and Performances in the Park starting on July 6.
