The 95th Stampede was a big success according to everything I’ve heard. Many thanks to those who made it happen.
It’s officially summer. What can we expect for the rest of the season? The rest of the year? Weathermen are warning of hot weather, which will bring health issues, and more environmental woes, like wildfires.
We’ve had 2,981 wildfires this year already. They’ve taken some 19.5 million acres (7.9 million hectares) of land across Canada.
Two years ago, a heat dome made B.C. one of the hottest places on Earth. More than 600 people died, along with millions of sea creatures. Are we ready for a repeat?
Climate change is at the bottom of many issues but other worries – the cost of living, health care, social and political divisions, are impacting our well-being too. Many members of our society, including politicians, say Canada is broken, that our future is bleak.
I don’t buy that. Canada has troubles, but negative harping doesn’t improve anything, it drives us farther apart. Trump nastiness isn’t helping the U.S.A. It won’t help us either.
Recently I heard a different way of defining relationships. How about love versus fear? Do we hate or fear those who oppose us? Do we hate them because we’re afraid they’ll hurt us? Will hating people make them change their ways?
Everyone has a right to their own beliefs. We don’t have to like people to respect their perspectives. Many of today’s disagreements are based on misinformation — some of it deliberate. Half the battle would be over if we could agree on what’s true and what isn’t.
Canadians are decent people, and even with the mix of true and iffy information, it should be possible to reach compromises, or at least have friendly disagreements.
