Budget meeting needs to include public input

At the Jan. 31 Williams Lake City Council budget meeting — six people (myself included) attended to watch council deliberate on the 2012 budget and 2012-16 five-year financial plan.

It should be noted that mayor/council should be congratulated for opening up its budget process to the public.

However, the public was unable to provide comment, as was on the agenda, as adjournment of the meeting was called by Coun. Geoff Bourdon. At the Feb. 14 meeting at 7 p.m., I strongly encourage council to hold the public comment period first and not last.

If this was done,  it would make the whole idea around proactively engaging the public on the city’s budget much better, instead of making the public sit through a two-plus hour budget meeting only to watch the public comment cancelled.
