Bears do eat meat

Just today, Oct. 4, one of your readers, Sandra Lynch-Bakken, wrote “bears are omnivorous, which means a large percentage of their diet is vegetarian, not meat.” That is not what omnivorous means.

Omnivorous means eating every kind of food.

British Columbia provincial handbook No. 11, “The Mammals of British Columbia” by Ian McTaggart Cowan and Charles Guiget calls both the American black bear and the grizzly bear carnivores.

Please Ms. Lynch-Bakken, if you are going to use such words as omnivorous, do your homework.
