It is my pleasure and certainly an honour to serve the constituents of Cariboo-Chilcotin and ensure that their voices are heard in Victoria, and next week I will be returning to our capital for the start of another legislative session.

On Feb. 14, B.C.’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable Steven L. Point, will read the speech from the throne.

The following day, finance minister Colin Hansen will deliver the budget speech.

The throne speech outlines the reasons for summoning the legislative assembly and provides a broad outline of the government’s proposed legislation.

The budget speech will outline revenue and spending measures and will offer some insight into the economic condition of the province.

Following these speeches MLAs from both sides of the House will stand and have their opportunity to speak about their constituencies and how the throne and budget speeches will affect their area of the province.

In past responses to the throne and budget I have shared with the legislature the great places and wonderful people the Cariboo-Chilcotin area has to offer.

As you know, we find ourselves in an exciting and interesting time in B.C. politics with leadership campaigns being held by two parties.

For this reason this legislative session will be short, but it will return once a new premier has been elected and a schedule is decided upon.

The next leader of B.C. will be elected Feb. 26 and I look forward to working with our new premier and continuing to strengthen British Columbia.

While working in Victoria is important, I always look forward to returning to my constituency to work hard and serve the people of the community.

Donna Barnett is the Liberal MLA for Cariboo Chilcotin.
