There comes a time in our lives that one of our extended family is taken from us.
It is with that thought we wish to share with you that our dear friend Mike Fazekas has passed away, February 10, 2004.
Mike came to Canada in 1956, from his native home of Budapest, Hungary, where he was born December 12, 1937.
As a young man, Mike was full of hope as many were, who had left Cold War Europe and the grip of the old Soviet block countries.
He worked a variety of jobs until he was hired by the old Merrill and Wagner sawmill in Williams Lake, where he started to work in 1969.
Eventually, Weldwood of Canada purchased the sawmill and soon established the plywood plant.
Mike worked his way up to loader and LeTorneau operator, which he held until his retirement in 2000.
He had worked at the same site for 31 years.
In early 1970, Mike met his long-time companion, Retta Law and soon the two were inseparable, sharing time and gatherings with Retta’s family.
Mike and Retta bought a small home on South Lakeside in 1972.
Soon, home renovations and gardening would become Mike’s greatest joy and he took great pride in his prize vegetable garden and immaculate lawn and yard.
Mike’s vegetables were always top notch, and the garden rows were totally weed free. Mike even had a touch for growing herbs from time to time.
Mike will be remembered as a hard-working and caring man, as many of our family have experienced his generosity, the small man with a big smile was always quick to shake your hand and laugh, always happy to see you.
We would like to leave you with the following verse. “The passages of life are like a book, there is a beginning, middle, and end.
“The chapters between the covers are what will carry us through. With the close of the last page, so begins a new volume. Farewell Mike and God bless. May peace be yours.”
Mike is survived by his adopted Canadian family, Evan (Bev) Law, Marie Hardy (Gord Wilson), Milton (Carol) Law, Leslie Law and their extended families. Mike was predeceased by his companion, Retta Law and her son Rodger.
