November 27, 1941 - August 11, 2024

In loving memory ~

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Michael Leo Hewat on August 11, 2024, in Sidney, BC, at the age of 82. Born in Nanaimo, BC, Mike spent his early years in several locations, including Nanaimo, Taylor Lake, Grantham's Landing, Kaslo, and Enderby. After returning to Nanaimo to graduate, he joined the Canadian Scottish Regiment in 1959, later transitioning to the RCMP in 1961.

During his 25-year career with the RCMP, Mike served in communities across British Columbia, including Revelstoke, Kamloops, Chilliwack, Sumas, Penticton, Terrace, and Alexis Creek. His most meaningful role came with his transfer to Victoria, where he led Native Policing for BC. His dedication to fostering respectful and lasting relationships with Indigenous communities was a defining aspect of his career. Mike continued this important work after transferring to Williams Lake in 1981, retiring as a Staff Sergeant in 1986.

After his RCMP service, Mike remained committed to community service, taking on leadership roles with the Cariboo Regional District as Deputy Administrator of Community Service. He was an active member of the Rotary Club of Williams Lake and in turn, served as President. He and his wife also co-ordinated the District Rotary Student Youth Exchange program serving Quesnel, Williams Lake and 100 Mile areas. He was honored as a Paul Harris Fellow for his contributions.

In retirement, Mike's passion for life continued to shine through his many hobbies, including masonry, woodworking, and outdoor activities such as fishing, camping, and hunting. His curiosity and love for learning were constant, especially in reading about history.

One of Mike's greatest joys in retirement was traveling the world with his wife, Shirley. Together, they explored many countries, making lifelong friends along the way.

Above all, family was Mike's priority. Married to Shirley for 58 years, their deep bond was a cornerstone of his happiness. He was a devoted father to his three daughters and a loving grandfather. Known for his kindness, generosity, advocacy, humor, and storytelling, Mike enriched the lives of those around him and left a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Mike is survived by his wife Shirley; daughters Debbie, Tracy (Stephen), and Melanie (Ian); grandchildren Matthew, Kaylee, Stephen, and Ashley; his twin sister Helen (Bill); and his faithful dog, Buddy.

We lost an amazing man, but we are deeply grateful for the lasting influence he had on all of us.

Rest in peace, Mike.
