Jean Waite

October 5, 2003

A private family burial was held recently in Williams Lake for Jean Waite who passed away on October 5, 2003.

Mrs. Waite was a resident of the Cariboo for 57 years, having moved here from Vancouver in 1946. She was predeceased by her husband, Ronald in 1979.

A 1930 graduate of the University of British Columbia, Mrs. Waite had great interests in English literature and biology.

An accomplished bird watcher and amateur botanist, she quickly grew to love her chosen Williams Lake and the Cariboo in general and had an important role in recording plant species in the area from the late 1940s onward.

During her many field trips over the years Mrs. Waite imparted both her knowledge and enthusiasm to others, thereby making an important contribution to the study of local natural history.

She was always a keen supporter of the Scout Island Nature Centre and the Williams Lake Field Naturalists.

Her home was a place where many friends stopped by for fun and good conversation.

Mrs. Waite is survived by her step-daughter and son-in-law Marian and Ken Hargrove of Salt Spring Island and their sons Scott and Graham of Toronto, nieces Sabra Woodworth of Vancouver and Elizabeth (Claude) Woodworth of Victoria, and nephew Garth Woodworth of Victoria.

If friends wish, they may make a contribution to the Scout Island Nature Centre in Jean’s memory.

The family would like to express it’s sincere appreciation to Jean’s many friends for their warm companionship over the years, and to the wonderful medical and hospital staff members for their excellent care during her brief illness.
