Hugo Stahl

October 2, 2003

Stahl, Hugo (Clarence) was born April 21, 1937 in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, and passed away peacefully at his Chimney Lake home October 02, 2003 at the age of 66.

Hugo was born to parents Ed and Lydia Stahl who immigrated to Canada after making an arduous journey out of the Ukraine, USSR in 1927.

Raised in Oxbow, Hugo travelled west to B.C. to see what “mountains looked like.”

Hugo settled in Williams Lake in the 1950s.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Barbara; son Mark (Sharrie) and grandchildren Lauren, Allison and Bro of Kamloops; daughter Janet of Celista, B.C.; daughter Joanne (Brent Hobbs) and grandson Connor of Kelowna; and son Chris (Sue) of Williams Lake.

Hugo applied his prairie work ethic and strong sense of community to his adopted home.

He had a long and distinguished career as an independent businessman, city councillor, and city Economic Development Officer.

Hugo served Williams Lake as a volunteer for the Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, board of directors for the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, and many other local committees and boards - including the Stampede Association.

Hugo was also rumoured to be the original city mascot Williams Lake Willie.

In 1979, he was the recipient of the Rotary Citizen of the Year Award.

In his retirement, Hugo developed a community “fun golf” course at the Chimney Lake Fire Hall, where he was often seen mowing the fairways with his beloved John Deere tractor.

A celebration of life will be held for Hugo Stahl at the Chimney/Felker Lake Firehall in Williams Lake, Saturday October 11 at 1 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Chimney/ Felker Lake Fireman’s Fairways (2452 Felker Lake Drive, Williams Lake B.C., V2G 5J3) or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
