Dec 18, 1926 – Jan 3, 2018
Doris C. Lee passed away January 3 in Williams Lake after a brief stay in the Cariboo Memorial Hospital and Deni House.
Born and raised in Millville, California, Doris Pope was a school teacher in the late 1940’s when she met and married her beloved husband John Lee.
They moved to the Cariboo in 1950 taking up residence on the Circle W Ranch at Big Lake, B.C. As a young bride in a new country, Doris battled the gruelling hardships of backwoods living. With sheer tenacity and determination, she transformed herself from prim and proper school teacher into a highly skilled hunter, guider, trapper and shepherdess as detailed in her 2012 memoir, Ever Changing Sky.
Doris loved writing her memoir and greatly enjoyed attending craft fairs and bookstores to sell it. She considered it one of her greatest accomplishments.
Predeceased by her husband John in 1994 and son Michael in 2010, Doris is survived by her son Gary (Jeanne), granddaughters Tara Peterson and Meghan Fairburn, grandson John and their families. Her faithful companion Freckles, is now in the care of her dear friend, Dana Bell.
Gary and his family will bury her ashes alongside his Dad’s on a mountain in her beloved Cariboo.
