Doreen May Christie

May 1, 1927 -

September 16, 2008

Doreen was born in Vancouver on May 1, 1927 to parents Janet Nicholson and John Stewart, the seventh child in a family of eight children. She grew up in Vancouver and following graduation attended a secretarial school, and was then employed by the Canadian Air Force.

Doreen met her husband Lynn at Alta Lake, near Whistler while on vacation. They were married in 1950 and lived in Vancouver until 1959, when they moved to Burbank, California. In 1964, they returned to Vancouver and enjoyed being close to both of their families again. Doreen worked part time as a seamstress.

Doreen, Lynn and family embarked on a new adventure in 1969. In partnership with Doreen’s sister Catherine and brother-in-law Sandy, they purchased and operated the McBride Hotel in the small town of McBride.

They retired to Penticton in 1975, where Doreen loved walking along the beaches of Skaha and Okanagan lakes, and the beautiful gardens and orchards. Wanting to be closer to family, they relocated to Williams Lake in 1990.

In 1999, Lynn and Doreen moved back to Penticton to enjoy their youngest grandchildren. They remained in Penticton until 2005, when they returned to Williams Lake to reside at the Seniors Village. Doreen appreciated the kind and caring staff at the Seniors Village.

Doreen was quiet, kind, gentle, loving and described herself as a good listener. Doreen’s family was everything to her, and spending time with her daughters and grandchildren was very important. She was a loving and devoted wife to Lynn, and was rarely apart from him during their 58 years together.

Doreen is survived by her husband Lynn, daughter Joy (Kris), Anne and Jean (John), grandchildren Ben, Michael, Jamie, Andrea, Aaron and Jessica. She also left behind her sisters Grace and Jean, and nieces Darlene and Heather.

A memorial service was held on September 22, 2008 at the Seniors Activity Center. Donations may be made in memory of Doreen to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
