Bernice Monroe

June 8, 2016

Bernice passed away on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 at the age of 91 years, in Ashcroft, BC.

She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Bob.

Also by brother Thomas and sister Eleanor.

Bernice is survived by her children, Linda Monroe (Bob McCormick) of Ashcroft, Keith (Merla) Monroe of Williams Lake; grandchildren Melanie Lees (Brock Nicklas), Doug Lees (Shawna Gagne), Kira Kursteiner, Drew (Jill) Pakulak-Monroe; great grandchildren Paige, Braden, Caitlin and Coen Nicklas, Kaidance Lees, Caden Kursteiner; and great, great granddaughter Leah Fleet. Also survived by brothers Harold (Reen) Thorp, Earl Thorp, and Allan (Gladys) Thorp, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernice was born June 8, 1925 in Orange, California. The family moved to Strome, Alberta when she was a small child. In 1937 they moved again, to Woodpecker, BC where she attended the Woodpecker school and helped on the family farm. She and Bob were married May 26, 1948 and they started married life on their own farm in Strathnaver BC. Bob had a long career with the BC Forest Service which involved frequent moves to various locations around the province. They settled in Hixon, BC prior to Bob’s retirement, where she was a dedicated member of the Women’s Institute, and in 1996 was awarded lifetime membership in that organization. They later moved to Chilliwack, and then to Kamloops. Due to failing health, Bernice moved to Jackson House in Ashcroft in April 2015 where she was lovingly cared for until her passing.

Bernice loved to garden and grew wonderful vegetables and flowers and won prizes for both at the Fall Fairs in Hixon. She always had a knitting or crochet project on the go, and worked with the W. I. To make quilts for fundraising raffles. Above all, Bernice loved her family, and delighted in the

increasing numbers, joyfully welcoming each new addition.

Her hands are at rest; the memories and love remain.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at St. Alban’s Anglican Church, 501 Brink St., Ashcroft. If friends so desire, memorial donations in Bernice’s name may be made to Ashcroft LTC.
