Fire crews attend the scene of a garage fire on Smith Street Monday afternoon.

A woman is in police custody after allegedly lighting a fire in a garage on Smith Street Monday.

At about 3 p.m. the Williams Lake RCMP and the Williams Lake Fire Department responded to reports of a disturbance and a fire at the residence.

The investigation has revealed a dispute started inside the residence during a party and a woman was told to leave.

Police say the 29-year-old woman also had her two-year-old child with her.

The woman was agitated and, while fleeing, she allegedly lit a fire in the garage which burned a motorcycle and other items, according to the RCMP in a news release.

Quick action by the occupants with a fire extinguisher and garden hose contained the fire until the Williams Lake Fire Department attended.

The woman was arrested at her residence for arson and her child placed in the temporary care of relatives. The Ministry of Child and Family Development have been advised and the woman was held in custody and will appear before the court on June 14.

The investigation is still ongoing and the Williams Lake RCMP would like to speak to any other witnesses who may have observed the female in the residence or while she was leaving the residence on Smith Street at 3 p.m.
