WL firefighters undeterred by hurricane

In honour of Hurricane Irene that stormed up the U.S. east coast late last week, the revised schedule for the World Police and Fire Games 2011 includes a Hurricane Survivors Party.

Those “survivors” include a contingent of 17 from Williams Lake comprising of 12 firefighters who arrived in New York City Friday in time for a downgraded Irene.

“Everybody made it there,” said Williams Lake deputy fire chief Des Webster.

“Most of them got there on Friday before the weather came through so they all made it to their hotels.”

Other than some events being postponed, Webster said he hadn’t heard about the contingent being displaced due to bad weather.

“It (the hurricane) was a lot less than what they thought it was going to be when they finally got there.”

Many of the Williams Lake firefighters are participating in the dodge ball competition, one is running in the half marathon and two will be competing in golf.

The games run Aug. 26 to Sept. 5.
