Council has directed staff to plan for tender and paving of various streets in 2017, subject to budget approval.
During its regular meeting Tuesday, April 4 council received a report from engineering technologist Jeff Bernardy who listed several streets that are eligible for “mill-and-fill” rehabilitation.
Those areas include Eleventh Avenue North from Coxon Street to Smedley Street, Blair Street from Clarke Avenue to Western Avenue, Proctor Street from First Avenue to the east end and Fifth Avenue from Proctor Street to Carson Drive.
Bernardy said the proposed budget for paving in 2017 is $950,000, which finance committee chair Scott Nelson confirmed Friday is still a target as “road surfacing is a top priority.”
Council had asked staff for costs associated with rehabilitating Soda Creek Road, which Bernardy said would cost an estimated $950,000.
Zoning amendments and development permits
A public hearing will be held for a zoning amendment for properties at 105 to 117 Paxton Road on Tuesday, April 25 at city hall.
There are eight legal but non-conforming structures on the properties.
They include five single-family dwellings, one three-unit home, a garage and a storage unit. If the zoning amendment goes through it will bring the structures into conformance.
Additionally council approved the removal of a restrictive covenant on property located at 907 Proctor Street. The removal means the owners can proceed with an application to subdivide for an additional two lots on the property.
Charter Bus Lines of B.C. plans to build a five-bay garage at 1125 Murray Drive. The new 7,136.71 square feet building would be erected on a vacant industrial site.
Notices about the plan will be issued to nearby property owners and tenants, with the item coming back to council for further discussion at its regular meeting on April 25.
NCLGA travel costs approved
Council approved costs of travel and expenses for members of council who plan to attend the North Central Local Government Association conference being held in Terrace this coming May.
Community events
Council received an invitation to attend the annual McDonald’s Bicycle Rodeo taking place Saturday, May 6 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Canadian Tire parking lot.
Sacred Heart Catholic School will be hosting a May Fest event on Saturday, May 27, 12 to 10 p.m. The parking lot will be converted into a European style market with a petting zoo and children’s corner.
Proclamations
The week of May 1 to 7 will be proclaimed Mental Health Week in the city after city council received a request from the Canadian Mental Health Association Cariboo Chilcotin in a letter.
Transit award nominations being accepted
Nominations are being accepted for the 2016 Transit SuperStar awards up until April 21.
