The Williams Lake RCMP are advising the public of a scam circulating through the community.
Individuals are being contacted and provided a cheque to deposit into their personal bank account. They are then being asked to transfer some of the money to another person who does not reside in Canada and promised the money will be transferred back into their account at a later date.
When the cheque is returned as fraudulent by the bank, the person who deposited the cheque is responsible to pay the money back and cover the costs of transferring the money.
The RCMP are reminding people not to make financial transactions for people they do not know on the promise of receiving money in return.
