Two men were killed Saturday in an avalanche while snowmobiling on the Lower Dore Mountain Range near McBride.

When the avalanche occurred, three of four men who were snowmobiling together were caught in it.

One was able to dig himself out immediately, while the third man was dug out by the other two survivors, however, it was apparent he had succumbed to his injuries and was deceased at the time of the recovery.

The two survivors were not able to locate the fourth individual and sought help.

At the time, search and rescue deemed the conditions in the area to be too dangerous to attempt a search and recover effort.

On the morning of March 22, search and rescue, the coroners service and local resources implemented a recovery plan.

The deceased man was first removed by a long-line helicopter and once the avalanche technicians deemed the area safe, the second deceased man was located a short distance from the first in roughly 15 feet of snow.

The names of the two men are being withheld, however, RCMP said one is a 29-year-old from Ponoka, Alta., and the other is a 36-year-old from Sherwood Park, Alta.
