Stay home when roads bad: RCMP

If you don’t need to drive, don’t.

At least not in these snowy conditions, says Sgt. Bob Verbree of the Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services.

“It really comes down to personal safety,” he says. “If you don’t need to be out there, why go?”

While there hasn’t been that many collisions following snowy weather, the roads are in poor condition, with compact snow and ice.

And there is not a lot Interior Roads or similar outfits can do since salt and other chemicals don’t work when it is so cold.

“They do put sand out in very slippery corners but, again, it doesn’t really do anything — it gives traction for a short time and then it blows off,” Verbree says.

“The biggest thing you can do is make sure you are not going too fast. Slow down.”
