Six wildfires burning in 100 Mile Fire Zone

The majority of the fires are clustered near Eagle Lake north of Lac La Hache

Six wildfires are currently burning in the 100 Mile Zone this Friday.

Cariboo Fire Centre information officer Jessica Mack said the fires are mostly small in size and were discovered on Friday, May 19. The main fire of concern is located 2.7 kilometers south of Enterprise Road and is currently estimated to be 300 hectares in size and was first discovered on Thursday, May 18.

“There are BCWS personnel, heavy equipment and air support on site of the fire,” Mack said. “Yesterday, there was a thunderstorm that went through the area and resulted in lightning-caused fires within the South Cariboo region. An air patrol will occur this afternoon to help with the detection of new wildfires in the area.”

The majority of the remaining fires are clustered north of Lac La Hache near Eagle Lake within a few kilometers of one another. Currently one is under control, and two are being monitored by BC wildfire service officials.

Mack said resources have been dispatched to fight Fire C40392, about two kilometers away from Eagle Lake, which is around two hectares in size.

The remaining fire in the South Cariboo is located near Emerald Lake and is also out of control. Mack said that cold and wet weather is not expected until Sunday.

“Warmer and drier conditions are expected to persist until Sunday, where it is anticipated that an upper trough will move into the western portions of the fire centre,” Mack said. “This may result in thunderstorms throughout the centre.”
