Second TRU student sues institution

Documents filed in court address accident at Wiliams Lake campus of Kamloops university

Another student has filed a lawsuit against Thompson Rivers University.

In a notice of civil claim filed at the Kamloops Law Courts last month, former TRU trades student Devin Brown claims the institution’s negligence caused an accident that left him with a broken hand.

Brown was a student in a welding course at TRU’s Williams Lake campus in April 2010, the document states, when an improperly stored oxy-acetylene tank fell, “crushing his right hand between the tank and the concrete floor.”

According to the document, Brown says TRU failed to ensure his safety as a student and exposed him to risk by keeping the tanks “in a dangerous condition, thus becoming a hazard” to students.

Brown claims to have suffered “crushed and broken bones” in his right hand, nerve damage and soft-tissue damage as a result of the accident and has experienced depression and “loss of enjoyment of life.”

The document also alleges he has lost prospective earnings and will likely continue to in the future.

Based on those claims, Brown is suing TRU for general damages, special damages, interest and legal costs.

No dollar amount is included in the document.

TRU has yet to file a response.

The lawsuit is not the first filed against TRU by a student.

Adrian Miller is also suing the university, claiming he’s been mistreated by the institution since 2007. He was recently elected to TRU’s board of governors and senate as a student representative.
