In support of the Occupy Wall Street movement, a walk will take place today to raise awareness about poverty.

Homeless outreach worker Wayne Lucier with the Canadian Mental Health Association — Cariboo Chilcotin Branch and Tom Salley are organizing the walk.

“More people have to start recognizing the fact we have way too many people living below the poverty line,” Lucier says. “Something has to be done about that.”

He says the average rent in the city is $600 for a single person, while those on social assistance only receive $610 a month (for a single).

“That’s why we’re doing this walk,” says Lucier, who hopes between 20 and 100 people show up to take part.

It will begin at 11:45 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) on First Avenue South, between Yorston and Oliver streets.
