The striking image of local cowboy Bill Twan barrelling down the home stretch in the thrilling Roman Race will be embedded in Williams Lake Stampede history with this year’s 90th Annual Williams Lake Stampede poster.

In recognition of its long, rich 90 years of rodeo history, the Williams Lake Stampede Poster Committee chose a vintage image for this year’s 2016 Stampede poster.

It shows Bill Twan in the lead on Lucky and Penny in the Roman Race.

The event has long since faded into the past, but the thrilling image remains and is a part of Stampede history.

The iconic snapshot of the infamous Roman Race; the drama of which is aptly illustrated by the clouds of dust and clomps of earth being churned up by the horses’ hooves as the teams race down the straight-o-way to the finish line. The photograph illustrates so much more than just a horse race.

It showcases the character of the cowboy; the bravado that allows him to try what others would not dare; the confidence in his ability and the perseverance that success requires.

The photograph was entered by Liz Twan on behalf of the Twan Family Collection.

The poster was designed by Erik Zwiers of Papyrus Printers.

Poster and postcards for the 2016 Stampede will be available at the Stampede ticket office in June, and during the Stampede.

The 90th Annual Williams Lake Stampede will take place June 30, July 1-3.
