Mudslide closes Highway 16 east of Valemount

A mudslide east of Prince George has closed Highway 16

The Valemount RCMP and the Ministry of Highways are currently en route to the scene of a reported mudslide on Highway 16, 8 kilometres west of the junction with Highway 5.

North District Operations Communication Center (OCC dispatch) were notified of the slide at 12:37 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses advise the slide is approximately 50 feet wide and 1 foot deep and it appears that debris is still flowing indicating the slide could get worse, an RCMP press release noted.

There are no reports of any vehicles being trapped or injuries at this time.

The area is extremely dangerous and unpredictable and therefore Motorists traveling east of Prince George are asked to stay in town and away from the area.

Anyone traveling west from Kamloops, is asked to take an alternate route on Highway 97.

At 1:30 p.m. DriveBC reported a geotechnical assessment was in progress.
